Can I take the morning after pill before having sex?

The morning after pill (which is officially referred to as emergency hormonal contraception) is intended for emergency use only. It is not meant to be used before sex. The morning after pill should only be used after sex in the event that your regular contraceptive method hasn’t worked (i.e. if the condom broke or you’ve forgotten to take your pill) or if you’ve had unprotected sex and want to help avoid unplanned pregnancy.

Rather than taking the morning after pill before having sex, consider talking to your doctor or pharmacist about regular contraceptive methods like the pill, the patch, or a long acting reversible contraceptive method (LARC) like the IUD or IUS. You can also use condoms to help prevent pregnancy, and they are the only contraceptive method to also prevent sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
